The Kitty Holster is a soft walking vest for cats. It wraps around the body and closes with Velcro at the neck and the belly, with no thin straps or plastic clips.

Who it suits

Cats who dislike straps or having anything pulled over their head, and owners who want a vest that is hard to back out of. Some cats find a full vest restrictive, so give yours time to get used to it indoors.

Key facts

  • Soft, US-made walking vest that secures with strong Velcro closures (Kitty Holster)
  • Sizes by neck and chest: XS 5 to 9 in neck and 10 to 14 in chest; S/M 9 to 12 and 13 to 17; M/L 10 to 13 and 16 to 20; XL 11 to 15 and 19 to 23 (Kitty Holster)
  • Most cats wear S/M (about 8 to 13 pounds) or M/L (longer, wider cats of about 12 to 20 pounds); measure the torso behind the front legs (Kitty Holster FAQ)
  • Made of cotton or KoolNit mesh with an undyed cotton lining, and machine washable; close the Velcro tabs before washing (Kitty Holster FAQ)
  • For cats that pull backwards, the maker says the fit should be snug, like a glove (Kitty Holster FAQ)

What reviewers say

Cats.com tested it on two harness-trained cats and found the Velcro strong and secure, but one cat refused to walk in it and the other moved clumsily, especially when jumping. Rover named it the best jacket harness; its testers found it virtually escape-proof, but noted the cotton stays wet in rain and some cats find it a little restrictive. Rover suggests choosing the smaller size if your cat is between two. We did not test it ourselves.

Pros and cons

  • Pro: Soft cotton vest with no thin straps or plastic clips, per the maker
  • Pro: Velcro closures open in opposite directions, which the maker says makes it hard to escape
  • Pro: Machine washable
  • Con: Not adjustable beyond the Velcro, per PetsRadar
  • Con: Some cats move clumsily or refuse to walk in it (Cats.com)
  • Con: Cotton stays wet in rain (Rover); no leash included

Cautions

  • Never leave your cat alone in the harness or tied up; supervise every time it is on.
  • Fit it snugly. The maker says no cat is escape-proof in every harness, especially when tied out, which it does not recommend.
  • Before going outside, ask your vet about vaccinations and flea, tick and parasite prevention, and make sure your cat is microchipped.
