The PETLIBRO Dockstream is a cat water fountain that runs from a rechargeable battery in its base, so it needs no cord while in use. It holds 2.5 liters and has a detachable stainless steel basin.
Who it suits
Homes where there is no outlet near a good spot for water, or where a cord is a chewing or tripping worry. Check the newer Dockstream 2 too; Wirecutter had reliability problems with this original model.
Key facts
- Rechargeable battery lasts up to 30 days; it can also run plugged in (PETLIBRO)
- 2.5L capacity, BPA-free ABS body with a detachable stainless steel basin, 4-layer filtration (PETLIBRO)
- Two modes: continuous flow, or a sensor mode that runs the water when a pet comes near (PETLIBRO)
- Low battery and low water indicators (PETLIBRO)
- Replace the filter and foam filter every 2 weeks, and clean the pump and fountain every 2 weeks; the maker says no parts are dishwasher safe (PETLIBRO)
What reviewers say
Cats.com named it the best overall: no wires to trip on, up to 30 days per charge, a sensor mode that runs only when a cat is within about 80 cm, and indicators for low water and battery. Its only listed con was the cost.
Wirecutter used to recommend it as simple to clean and easy to move, but dropped it after long-term testing: for one tester it stopped charging, and another found the tank had sprung a leak. Wirecutter now picks the newer Dockstream 2. We did not test it ourselves.
Pros and cons
- Pro: No cord, so it can go where there is no outlet (Cats.com)
- Pro: Low battery and low water indicators, per the maker
- Pro: Motion-sensing mode runs the flow only when a pet is near (Cats.com)
- Con: In Wirecutter’s long-term test one unit stopped charging and another leaked
- Con: The maker says no part is dishwasher safe
- Con: Filters need changing every 2 weeks, per the maker
Cautions
- Introduce a fountain gradually: International Cat Care suggests putting it out empty first, then adding water, then turning it on.
- Keep at least one ordinary water bowl out as well, in case your cat does not take to the fountain or the pump stops.
- If your cat starts drinking much more or less than usual, contact your vet.
