The Hurtta Mudventure Dog Coat ECO is an unlined raincoat in recycled polyester with taped seams. It covers more of the body than most shells and adjusts at the neck, collar, belt and back length.
Who it suits
Dogs that come home muddy and wet from long walks, and owners who want a closer, adjustable fit. Measure carefully before you buy, because the maker and testers disagree on sizing.
Key facts
- Water column rating of over 10,000 mm, recycled polyester with PU lamination (Hurtta)
- Fully taped seams and sewn-in reflectors (Hurtta)
- Harness opening with snap-button closure; rear leg loops (Hurtta)
- Sized by back length, 25 to 65; the maker says choose the larger size if your dog is between sizes (Hurtta)
- Machine wash at 30 C on a mild cycle (Hurtta)
What reviewers say
Business Insider named it the best for coverage: it “offers the most coverage of all the raincoats we tested”. Downside: “We found the clasp tough to open at first”.
Treeline Review named it the most adjustable, but says “I often recommend that folks size down when purchasing Hurtta coats for the first time”, the opposite of the maker’s advice, and that it would “need to be hung up to dry for a few hours or overnight”. We did not test it ourselves.
Pros and cons
- Pro: Most coverage of the raincoats Business Insider tested
- Pro: Water column over 10,000 mm and fully taped seams, per the maker
- Pro: Treeline named it the most adjustable coat
- Con: Sizing advice conflicts: the maker says size up between sizes, testers say it runs big
- Con: Business Insider found the clasp tough to open at first
- Con: Treeline says it needs hours or overnight to dry between uses
Cautions
- Check the fit: snug but not restricting movement, with leg openings that do not rub. If your dog bites, scratches or rubs at the coat, PDSA says that is a sign it does not fit right.
- Dry your dog after wet walks and hang the coat to dry before you store it. Vets quoted by Business Insider and the AKC warn that prolonged dampness, or a coat put away damp, can encourage bacteria or skin infections.
- Take the coat off indoors. PDSA notes most dogs can quickly overheat in a coat in a heated home, and thick-coated dogs may not need one at all.
- A raincoat is not a treatment. If your dog is shivering, lethargic, confused, unsteady or has pale gums after time in cold, wet weather, the RSPCA and PetMD say to take them to a vet immediately.
