Poop bags are the cheapest thing you buy for your dog and the one you notice most when it fails. A good bag is big enough, does not tear or leak, and is easy to open on a cold morning. This page covers what to look for, what “compostable” and “biodegradable” really mean for dog waste, how to get rid of it properly, and our picks for bags and a leash holder.
The short answer: buy a roomy, leakproof bag that fits your dispenser, carry it on every walk, and put the full bag in a trash can. Unless your local program says it takes pet waste in certified compostable bags, a “compostable” bag goes in the trash like any other, so a sturdy recycled plastic bag is a sensible choice.
How we wrote this: the disposal advice comes from the US Environmental Protection Agency, the Federal Trade Commission, the Biodegradable Products Institute and city waste programs, and the product notes come from hands-on tests by Treeline Review and Reviewed and from the makers’ own pages, all linked where they are used and checked on 29 October 2026. We did not test these bags ourselves, and we do not show prices or ratings.
Why picking up matters
The EPA says pet waste is a leading source of nutrient and bacteria pollution in urban streams and waterways, and that it can make people and animals sick and feed weed and algae growth. It calls the idea that dog waste is a natural fertilizer that will take care of itself a misconception. Its pet care fact sheet keeps the fix simple: carry a bag on every walk, then throw it in the nearest trash can, and never throw dog waste into a storm drain.
What to look for in poop bags
- Size. Bags around 9 by 13 inches suit most dogs. Very small bags are a common complaint: Treeline found one brand smaller than standard and prone to ripping, and Reviewed found another too small for anything but tiny dogs.
- Strength. Look for a bag that testers found leakproof and hard to tear. Thickness is sometimes listed in microns or mils; thicker usually means sturdier, but tester results matter more than the number.
- Rolls or handles. Rolls fit leash dispensers; tie handle bags are easier to knot and carry but usually come flat-packed in a box.
- Scent. Scented bags mask some odor, but some testers dislike the perfume. Unscented bags do not fully block odor either.
- Material. Many bags now use recycled plastic. See the next section before paying extra for “compostable”.
Compostable and biodegradable bags: what the labels mean
In 2015 the Federal Trade Commission warned 20 makers and sellers of dog waste bags that their “biodegradable” and “compostable” claims may be deceptive. The FTC explained that an unqualified biodegradable claim suggests the bag will break down completely within a year, but most waste bags end up in landfills, where no plastic biodegrades in anywhere close to one year, if at all. It added that dog waste is generally not safe to compost at home and very few facilities accept it (FTC press release, archived copy).
The Biodegradable Products Institute, which certifies compostable products in North America, says pet waste products can only get commercial composting certification, because backyard bins do not usually get hot enough to kill the germs in pet waste, and that its certified pet waste bags are for distribution in Canada only. BioBag, for example, says it does not put a compostable label on its US dog waste bags (BioBag). The EPA fact sheet also says waste from meat eating pets should go in the garbage, not a compost pile.
Rules depend on where you live. Solana Beach, California asks residents to put all animal waste in the trash, whatever bag it is in, while Calgary accepts bagged pet waste in its green cart only in certified compostable or paper bags. Check your local program before you buy compostable bags for that reason.
Our picks
Earth Rated Dog Poop Bags Refill Rolls
Best everyday bags. Plastic bags made with 65% certified post-consumer recycled plastic, unscented or lavender, with a leak-proof guarantee from the brand (Earth Rated). Treeline Review lists them at 9 by 13 inches, 15 microns thick, 15 to a roll, and named them the best overall bags: the tester has never had one rip in years of use. The cons: a little pricier than bags of plain virgin plastic, and the unscented version does not fully block odor. Reviewed also found them thick and durable, and preferred the unscented version over the lavender scent.
Best for: daily walks with any dog. Skip if: you want handles.
Pogi’s Poop Bags with Easy-Tie Handles
Best with handles. Flat-packed tie handle bags, about 7 by 14.5 inches including the handles, made with 70% post-consumer recycled plastic, in Fresh Scent or Unscented (Pogi’s). In its test, last updated in 2020, Reviewed named Pogi’s the best overall: leak-free, extra roomy and easy to tie off and carry. The handle bags do not fit an average leash dispenser and dispense from the box instead. BestReviews calls them long and sturdy but notes other brands give more bags for the price. Pogi’s also sells refill rolls, 9 by 13.5 inches, that fit standard dispensers.
Best for: big dogs and easy knotting. Skip if: you keep bags in a leash dispenser.
Wilderdog Dog Poop Bag Holder
Best leash holder. A soft, water resistant fabric pouch that holds one standard roll and clips on with two carabiners so it does not dangle; it weighs 0.9 oz and bags are sold separately (Wilderdog). Treeline Review named it the best clip-on dispenser for leashes: soft and flexible, so it cannot break if you drop the leash, with some wear after years of use but no loss of function.
Best for: anyone who has cracked a hard plastic dispenser. Skip if: your leash has no room for two clips.

FAQ
Are compostable dog poop bags worth it?
Only if your local program accepts pet waste in certified compostable bags. The FTC says very few facilities accept dog waste, and BPI limits its pet waste bag certification to commercial composting in Canada. Everywhere else, the bag goes in the trash.
Can I put dog poop in my home compost?
No. The EPA says waste from meat eating pets should go in the garbage because composting does not readily destroy its parasites, bacteria and viruses, and BPI says backyard bins do not get hot enough to kill them.
Can I flush dog poop bags?
No. Pogi’s tells buyers to put used bags in the trash and not flush them. Throw full bags in a trash can.
What size poop bag do I need?
Around 9 by 13 inches suits most dogs. For big dogs, a roomy bag or one with handles is easier to use.
Is it OK to leave dog poop in the woods?
The EPA calls the idea that dog waste will take care of itself a misconception, and says pet waste pollutes streams and can make people and animals sick. Bag it and carry it out to a trash can.
