Who it suits
Owners of medium and large dogs who struggle with clippers or grinders and want to teach the dog to file its own front nails. Dogs that already paw at things learn it fastest. It does not reach dew claws, and rear feet take extra training.
Key facts
- Curved M-shaped surface meant to reach the side nails as well as the middle ones (maker)
- Plywood board about 0.39 in thick, with rounded corners and side handles; can be tilted against you or laid flat (maker)
- Hidden treat box under the sanding surface to draw the dog to dig at the board (maker)
- Sizes L (17.8 x 9.6 x 2.7 in) and XL (21.5 x 9.6 x 2.7 in) (maker)
- The maker lists 3 sticky sandpaper sheets in the box; Whole Dog Journal’s unit came with two spare sheets in different grits (maker, https://dookron.com/products/m-shaped-dog-scratch-pad-for-nails-with-treat-box-dog-nail-scratch-board-for-large-dogs-dog-nail-file-toy-and-shorten-dog-s-side-nail-easier-with-treat-box-l; Whole Dog Journal)
What reviewers say
Whole Dog Journal: Jae Thomas, a dog trainer and gear tester, named it the best dog scratch pad overall in a hands-on test of four pads with her tester dogs (page updated October 2026). The curve helped file the nails more evenly than a flat board when the dogs scratched the middle, and she found the sandpaper as coarse as the previous winner, which is no longer sold. Her one gripe: the treat slider sits in the top third of the board, so a dog scratching low, lying down or very small may not reach it at first.
We did not test it ourselves.
Pros
- Curve files outer nails as well as middle ones
- Coarse sandpaper
- Treat box helps training
- Spare sandpaper included
Cons
- Treat slider sits high on the board
- Rear feet and dew claws still need another method
Good to know
- Check the nails after each session so they are not filed too short, and stop if your dog seems sore.
- Torn, split or bleeding nails, or a dog that limps or licks a paw, need your vet, not the board.
