The North States Tall Easy Swing & Lock is the 36 inch tall version of the Easy Swing & Lock: a steel gate that screws to the wall and latches itself behind you.

Who it suits

Dogs that jump over a standard 30 inch gate. The AKC quotes a vet who suggests at least 30 inches for bigger breeds or jumpers; this adds another six inches.

What reviewers say

Wirecutter picked it for tall or acrobatic dogs: if your dog can clear a 30 inch gate, another half foot may be enough. It has the same setup and automatic latch as the standard model and was the second sturdiest gate tested. Wirecutter says it is not necessary for most dogs and still will not stop most cats. We did not test it ourselves.

• A gate is not a way to leave a dog shut away for long; Dogs Trust advises not leaving a dog alone for more than four hours.
